How to USB Tether Your Samsung Vibrant!
In this post, we will show you how to USB tether your Samsung Vibrant and share your phone’s internet data network with your computer.
This method is “free” so long as you have unlimited data with T-Mobile and also it requires no rooting of your phone.
First, you will need to download Samsung Kies from UK site. (US version might not work)
Second, you will need to install the Samsung Kies program.
During install, just choose “Mobile Phone” so you don’t install all the junk.
Once install is complete, put your Samsung Vibrant into “Kies Mode” by going to Settings->Applications->USB.
Connect your Samsung Vibrant to your computer via USB cable.
Now, start up your Samsung Kies program on your computer then hit the “Home” button on your phone.
(You should see a screen like above on your Samsung Vibrant.)
Open up the Samsung Kies program on your computer and you should see that your Samsung Vibrant is recognized.
Find the “Tethering” icon and click on it.
Hit the “Seetings” icon and you should see a screen like below:
Here, enter “epc.tmobile.com” for APN Name and “*99#” for Phone Number.
Hit Okay, then hit the 2-phones icon button.
Give it like 5 seconds and the Samsung Kies should say “The Internet is connected”.
Btw, don’t use the default settings on the Tethering program for U.S. T-Mobile, it doesn’t work!
That’s it, now you can use your Samsung Vibrant as a 3G USB modem for your computer.
I believe there’s also ways to do it with Mac or Linux but we won’t go into that today, perhaps another time.
*Note – This method only works on Windows based computers right now.
(Here’s proof that I’ve got 3G USB connection to my computer off my Samsung Vibrant, not too shabby.)

Don’t mean to hijack this post, but i was able to tether my new t-mobile samsung vibrant on linux (ubuntu!) using the easytether app in the marketplace. Didn’t have to root the phone either. Connected using the t-mobile g1 option, works PERFECTLY. Super fast.

I hate to say this but it appears there are more people this isn’t working for than those it is. I have the same problem as everyone else here. My phone says connected but Kies never gets past trying to connect the device. Anyone with a solution? Umm… Please.

Yep, it worked on my Samsung Vibrant. I’m in NY and it gave me the 1.68 Mbps download–not bad at all. Thanks. The funny thing is that after I click on the connect icon on the Kies software in my laptop, it processed it for two to three minutes and said something like “Ras error, device not recognized.” However, I was able to see it in my list of connections and select it and then connect to it.

I’m having the same issue – Kies cannot connect to the device.
August 6th, 2010 at 2:21 pm
Ok here’s the deal. First check your micro SD If you didn’t format it then Kies won’t connect your device. To verify this unmount the Micro SD then plug the USB back in. This should do the trick. Remember that formatting the micro SD will erase it so back it up before hand.

for those of you who says keys cannot connect to the device, i had to close the window that was in the background that asks what you want to do with the device. i chose “do nothing” for some reason, kies was waiting for a decision. after that, windows 7 finished installing the device and everything was fine.

I never got kies to run on XP, gave me initializing and even when I copy the kies on my computer it wouldn’t run it because it said no network connection found. I followed the steps. Help please

Following these steps I get a “Ras create phone failed” error. Any ideas what is causing this? Thanks

OK. Some new and more specific information. I went through the procedure I described above on a different PC (Both have been XP machines so far). You need to install the Kies software first to get the drivers, but once you have Dial Up Networking working you can uninstall Kies.
Once the software/drivers are installed and the device is connected in Kies mode, your PC will recognize the phone as a media device and as a phone modem. (Note: If you don’t want to have to change the USB Settings on the phone all the time, “Ask on Connection” seems to work fine.) Go to Control Panel -> Phone and Modem Options -> Modems tab to see the modem. Click on properties. If you want, you can query the modem under the diagnostics tab to verify that it returns data. Enter the initialization string under the Advanced Tab in “Extra initialization commands” exactly as below:
at+cgdcont=1,”IP”,”epc.tmobile.com”
Then you need to setup the Dial Up Networking under Control Panel -> Internet Connections -> Connections Tab. Just add a “Dial up to private number” connection and enter “*99#” as the phone number. Leave the username, password, and domain blank. If you want, you can go into the “Properties” button and turn of “Prompt for name…” and “Prompt for phone number”. When you get back to the Internet Connection dialog, you will probably want to set “Never Dial a Connection” and dial it manually when needed.
To connect, go to “Network Connections”. One way is to right click on “My Network Places” and select “Properties”. Then just double click on the dial up networking entry you created. If you didn’t turn off the username and phone # prompting, just click Dial or whatever to continue past. It should connect momentarily.
Once you have it all working, you can remove Kies, if you wish. It apparently leaves all the drivers behind.

I am connected, but after hitting the 2 phones key, and the yes button, error message: RAS Create Phone Failed….What to do to fix this? What does this mean, anyway?
August 22nd, 2010 at 7:18 am
Just saw Terrence and Joseph got the same error…HELP! How to tether?????
August 22nd, 2010 at 11:54 am
Yea i know lisa, I thought i had it for a sec and then that keep popping up
August 22nd, 2010 at 7:45 pm
I had the same “RAS create phone failed”. I tried restarting the Telephony service and that did not help either. After a few more trials I received an xml error. Reinstalling the Kies application on my PC finally helped and I was able to access the internet.
Maybe you guys too can try the reinstall. Let us know if that worked. BTW, I have a Windows 7 64 bit machine.
August 23rd, 2010 at 2:40 pm
Does that mean i have to uninstall it and reinstall it?
August 23rd, 2010 at 8:25 pm
Terrence,
Yes. I got it to work after the uninstall/restall. It runs faster than my current AT&T DSL Lite. If only I could figure out a way to now get the printer to work since this is not a wireless modem…Any suggestions on this, aside from connecting the computer via USB, to the printer?
August 23rd, 2010 at 8:26 pm
***reinstall*** …Left out the “in.”
August 24th, 2010 at 10:49 pm

August 28th, 2010 at 11:08 pm
Just tried this and it works just fine for me. I did not have to change the default “Tmobile USA” settings though. Kies said the connection was terminated almost immediately. Apparently not…
My laptop still says it is connected by “SGH-T959_T-Mobile US”. I’m posting over the T-Mo connection right now.
